Past the shallows the lagoon floor opens into bare sand, and the mermaids are always arguing over who gardens which patch of it. You swim the stone rim of the reef, trailing a line of pearls behind you. Break away across the open water and back again, and everything your line encloses turns to coral, kelp and fan — that stretch is yours. But the jellyfish drift the open water, and if one touches an unfinished line the pearls scatter and you lose a breath. Stingers patrol the reef edges you already hold, so keep moving.
