Leaves drift ankle-deep down a crooked clapboard street where every porch is stacked with carved pumpkins and every window glows amber. Scarecrows keep watch at both ends of the lane, bats loop across a huge orange moon, and past the great black oak the covered bridge waits with its lantern already burning.
