★ Thirteen storeys of forgotten grandeur · A cage elevator that only goes one way · Guests since 1928 ★
A 1920s grand hotel on the far ridge of Lantern Row, dark since a night the guests do not speak of. The stained-glass skylight is shattered, the marble floor is drifted with dust and yellowed newspapers, and a green banker's lamp still burns on the empty front desk. At the far end of the lobby stands a golden cage elevator with wrought-iron scrollwork — its floor dial is pointed at the thirteenth. Step inside, and the night liftman will take you all the way up. Coming down is his business, not yours.
Ring the brass bell and choose your cabin for the night.
