The Keeper's Climb

The keeper's own lift, on the night the hurricane arrives. The brass cage gate shuts at the footings and the wet granite runs past the bars — then the gate slides open on the keeper's hall, on lightning cracking over the open ocean, and on the sea itself breaking white against the tower. At the top the great lens turns at eye level in the teeth of the storm. Then the lift lets go, the whole tower races past the bars, and the gate opens on the lobby.
