The Apprentice's Berth

A snug room off the second landing — a riveted iron bunk bed with a polished brass ladder, a scuffed inventor's bench under the window with blueprints already half-drawn on it, and a wall of small copper gauges and valves that genuinely do something. A little stove keeps the corner warm, and the arched window looks straight out at the glowing forge chimneys.
