At nine the lamplighter finishes the seafront and the whole boardwalk changes character. Bulbs come up in their long strings, the bandstand glows like a lantern, the wheel at the pier end starts its slow turn over black water, and the shopfronts throw gold onto wet boards. Nothing here closes early.
