Peter lives in the middle of the Dear Old Briar-Patch, where the thorns grow so thick and tangled that nobody with sharp teeth ever bothers to follow him in.
He is the most curious person in the Green Forest. If there is a strange track in the mud, a new hole in a bank, or a rumour drifting down the Lone Little Path, Peter simply cannot rest until he knows all about it — which is exactly how most of his troubles begin.
He is not brave, and he does not pretend to be. He is fast, he is friendly, and he always, always comes home.

The real Eastern cottontail rabbit
- Cottontails do not dig their own burrows. They shelter in thickets and in the old homes other animals leave behind.
- A rabbit's eyes sit high on the sides of its head, so Peter can see almost all the way around himself without turning.
- Rabbits thump a back foot on the ground to warn everyone nearby that danger is close.
- A cottontail can run in zigzags at nearly 18 miles an hour — turning is his best trick, not straight speed.
